Chapter One
Dry Prairie pack ran towards Little Brook with excitement. Their golden and silver pelts blended in perfectly with the landscape. A big strong male wolf ran at ahead of the pack, but there was one wolf confidently running ahead of this powerful dominate wolf. She was beautiful, swift, and strong. Most of all, confident.
"Palla!" came a yelp, "Are we there yet? Are we there yet?"
Palla, this confident beautiful she-wolf huffed a wolf-laugh. "Almost, Sunrise."
Sunrise, who had ran up next to Palla barked in excitement. The pack was heading to the Den. Palla was ready for the pack to meet the pups. Soon they came to Little Brook, small fast flowing water. Palla leaped over the stream and headed up a small rocky hill. There was the Stone Den. The pack headed halfway up the hill, waiting for Palla to signal them to come. Husk stepped forward cautiously. Husk had been to the den, but had only seen glimpses of squirming little bodies. Palla went into the den and led the pups out. The pups yipped in excitement. Husk greeted them excitedly. The pups licked him happily, wagging their tails joyfully. Palla waited for a few moments then went to get the pack. Dry Prairie pack greeted the pups with licks, wagging of tails, smiles, and soft loving whimpers.
Chapter Two
A few hours later, after the Meeting of the Pups, Dry Prairie pack decided to go on a hunt. Palla stayed behind with the pups. Coyote, the smallest of the pack, was being pushed around by Akila and Lupe. Akila and Lupe, if there is such a thing as “second in command in the wolf world, sure fitted that job of second in command. They loved to push around poor Coyote, especially Lupe. Coyote whimpered and lowered to the ground, tail between his legs, ears lowered, shivering. Husk came over and growled at Akila and Lupe. Coyote had understood enough that Akila and Lupe was boss. Coyote licked Husk’s muzzle and crawled away next to his sister who growled softly. Coyote thought to himself that maybe he could try doing what Akila and Lupe had just done to his sister. After all, she was smaller then him. Coyote stood up, straight and tall and growled at his sister. Her sister snorted and bit his shoulder. Coyote whimpered and shrunk away.
Meanwhile, a white she wolf with happy glowing amber eyes, sniffed at Dry Prairie pack’s scent markings. The white she wolf sat down and wondered where this pack was, and if they might invite her to join them. She pricked her ears when she heard panting. The breeze blew towards her and told her the pack was coming over the hill. She got up and wagged her tail. Once the pack saw her they stopped and waited for Husk to do something. Husk trotted to the border and sniffed the she wolf.
“What’s your name?” Husk growled.
“Snowflake.” Said the white she wolf, who had lowered her head respectfully, “I wish to join your pack.”
Husk wagged his tail. “Welcome to the pack, Snowflake!”
Snowflake licked Husk’s muzzle in thanks and ran up the hill and greeted her new pack. Akila and Lupe were first to sniff her, then Swifty and Windy. Swifty liked Snowflake a lot.
“Where do you come from?” he asked.
“A few nights journey from here. My pack is called Swift Winds pack.” Said Snowflake, wagging her tail.
Swifty wagged his tail to and asked her if she wanted to play by slapping his paws on the ground and wagging his tail up in the air.
Snowflake barked in excitement. Coyote lowered his tail with sadness. Swifty getting all the friends, again.
Chapter Three
Dry Prairie pack began the hunt. The grass was long and swaying the breeze. A herd of elk was nearby the watching wolves, who hid in the grass. The bull elk, huge antlers reaching up to the sky, but never touching it. The female elk grazed quietly. Akila’s amber gaze locked on a female elk who seemed to be ill. Husk saw the elk, too, and signaled the pack to silently surround it. All the wolves fanned out, they cased away a few elk who were grazing near their target then disappeared in the long grass once more. They circled the sick elk. Then, on Husk’s signal they ran at the elk. The elk bolted. The elk ran right into the trap, Husk leaped out and attacked it, biting its leg before it could respond. Akila avoided the angry elk’s kicks and clawed at its side. Snowflake beat Lupe to the elk and bit the elk’s back leg and tugged fiercely. Swifty watched her in admiration when Coyote saw his chance. Coyote ran to Snowflake and started pulling the other back leg. The other wolves were attacking the elk in other ways, snapping at its legs, clawing its sides. The elk was almost down, if only Coyote was stronger! The elk jerked away from his grip and kicked him. Coyote fell to the ground, bloody and unconscious. Snowflake had dodged and looked at him in horror. The pack stopped attacking and ran to Coyote. The elk ran away, limping badly. Lupe snarled.
Chapter Four
Snowflake sniffed the out of conciseness wolf. She tried to find a wound. The only thing she found was a long scratch, not deep or wide, it went from his shoulder to the top of his back. She cleaned it by licking it. Lupe pushed through the crowded wolves and snarled at Snowflake.
“That’s his only injury?! That weakling! I’ll…” Lupe was cut off by Snowflake.
“I still need to check his other side, so it’s either you shut up or go away and stop bothering me! How do except a wolf to focus in that ruckus your making?!” snarled Snowflake.
Husk stepped in front of Lupe. “You heard what she said. I’ll enforce it with my authority if I have to, and you know you don’t want that!” growled Husk.
At the den Palla began to wonder if the pack had caught anything yet. Palla howled, hoping the pack would hear her and answer back.
Husk pricked his ears when he heard the howl. His mate was worried. Husk howled back, Akila, Lupe, and Swifty quickly joined in. Windy and the others soon joined in, including Snowflake. Coyote tried to howl but his howl was quiet and shaky.
Coyote had woken up a while ago and was starting to feel better. Snowflake had checked his other side and felt a bruise, a bad one.
Chapter Five
Coyote, with lots of help, had been moved to the Den to rest. The pups, Long Grass, Breeze, and Howl, loved to play with him. Coyote noticed that Howl seemed to be the pup-leader. Along with his cautious but good natured Breeze, and the smart but small Long Grass made a good puppy pack. Coyote licked Breeze, who yelped, then seeing who it was growled. Coyote huffed and picked Breeze up and set her down next to her brother, Howl. Howl barked and slapped his paws on the ground. Breeze wagged her tail and Howl started to chase her. Breeze doubled back on him and chased him with Long Grass. Howl growled and turned on Long Grass and play fought with him. Breeze laughed at this. So did Coyote, who enjoying his new life. Lupe snarled when he realized this.
One day Snowflake told Coyote he was healed, the pack was happy about this. So the pack went on a border patrol. A stranger wolf by the name of Yukon was waiting for an invitation to join. Coyote beat Lupe and Akila to him and started to talk to him. He came from a pack called Howling Rain.
Chapter Six
Coyote, Yukon, and Snowflake were trotting together. Coyote was happier then he had ever been before. Lupe and Swify were kept snarling at them. Snowflake sighed. Lupe and Swify were really getting her annoyed. Finally she bark-growled at them to stop. Swifty groveled away, leaving a growling Lupe.
“Ok, that’s it!” snarled Snowflake. She charged at Lupe and bit his ear. Lupe yelped and ran away.
Coyote licked Snowflake happily, “Thanks!”
A moon passed and the pups were growing and learning quickly. Coyote and Snowflake enjoyed playing with them. Yukon enjoyed play fights; he beat Lupe a couple of times. Husk and Palla were really starting to respect Coyote, Yukon, and Snowflake. Things were getting better and easier for Coyote. Lupe was planning something, though, he just knew it.
One day the pack got back from hunting to find a very sad Palla licking Howl. Snowflake found a wound on his back leg. That dawn when the pack went hunting, Palla, Lupe, and Coyote had stayed behind to help Palla with the pups. Coyote had gotten thirsty and went down to Little Brook. Palla came too. Then Coyote went back up and Lupe went down for a drink, then Palla and Lupe came up to find Coyote whining. He came up to find Howl unconscious!
Lupe trotted over to Husk and growled into his ear. Husk turned to Coyote, “So… jealous are we?” he snarled.
Chapter Seven
Coyote drank from a stream. Yukon, Snowflake, and Brook drank beside him. The pack had driven them away. Brook sat down.
“Lupe is behind this! He set the whole thing up…” snarled Snowflake.
Coyote whimpered and lay down. Yukon lay down beside Brook. Snowflake trotted around, snarling angrily.
“I can’t believe this!!” she snarled.
Yukon sat up. “I have an idea!” he barked.
They looked over at him. “What it your idea?” asked Brook.
“Let’s make our- huh?” Yukon looked past the others at a wolf in the distance.
Coyote and the others looked where he looked. A snarling wolf with salve gripping from his mouth was coming toward them. He was on a hill a ways a way.
“Is… that…” muttered Brook, “the-the” Brook was shuddering.
“Run!” cried Snowflake.
Coyote whimpered and ran. The black wolf ran. They all ran. They ran to a wide part of the stream and swam. The black wolf caught up with them and stopped at the shore. The wolf retched and collapsed, its eyes glazed but still looked wild and sick. Coyote whimpered and swam to the other shore. Snowflake sighed in relief.
Lupe smiled. Now Coyote was gone. The pack was howling for the passing of Howl, their beloved pup. Lupe snorted. He wanted to be the leader of Dry Prairie pack! He would do whatever it takes….
